What is the Devil's rice?

When we visited Japan a few years ago, we sometimes saw Onigiris with devil faces in the shelves at convenience stores. Maybe Akuma meshi meant devil’s rice.

When people start to eat this devil’s rice, it is almost impossible to stop eating, it’s that addictive. Therefore the original dish is called devil’s rice.

With this rice seasoning mix “Mazekomi Akumameshi” from Hamaotome, we can easily recreate this devil’s rice at home.

Looks like fish food, but you should try it!

If you don’t know furikake (Japanese rice seasoning mix), you probably are wondering how it tastes at first glance.

It looks like fish food, but trust us, it is yummy!

We love Furikake, so without any prejudices, we tried this devil rice seasoning.

No doubt, it is yummy, but it is not exactly our favourite furikake. Maybe, if they had more green Shiso and less Tenkasu it would have had the perfect balance.

If you want to try this devil’s rice, you can recreate it without this rice seasoning. The recipe is really simple, Tenkasu (deep fried dough), Tenpura sauce, green seaweed and green Shiso (perilla, Japanese herb) are mixed into the freshly cooked rice. By making it yourself, you can easily adjust the flavour so it’s just like you like it!
